WAKEFIELD — A local woman was taken to Winchester Hospital after she drove her vehicle into the front of Meletharb’s Ice Cream on Lowell Street Friday afternoon.

Police, Fire and Action Ambulance were dispatched to the scene after multiple 911 calls were received at about 4:45 p.m.

First responders found the 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser crashed through the front of the ice cream shop, shattering glass from a window and a door. The Building Inspector was called in and determined that there was no structural damage. There were no other injuries. Firefighters assisted with the cleanup.

There was no information on what caused the crash.

On Friday at about 11:15 a.m., police assisted drivers with the exchange of papers after a minor crash on Main Street between a 2013 Mini Cooper driven by a Melrose woman and a 2010 Nissan Rogue driven by a Wakefield man.

At about 11:30 p.m. on Friday, police helped with the paper exchange after a crash at Otis and Crescent streets between a 2013 Ford Fusion and 2018 GMC Acadia.

A Wakefield woman was taken to the hospital following a three-car crash on Farm Street in front of the High School at about 3:45 p.m. on Friday. The involved vehicles were a 2018 Chevy Colorado, a 2015 Kia Sorento driven by a Wakefield woman and a 2002 Nissan Maxima driven by a Wakefield woman. The other two drivers refused medical treatment. At least one of the cars was towed.

A Water Street family of four is displaced from their apartment after a fire at about 9:45 Saturday morning in a six-unit apartment building on Water Street.

There was initial law enforcement concern after some batteries taped together were determined to be the source of the fire. It turned out that the resident used multiple batteries to power a an electrical motor attached to a bicycle. The resident told police that he was charging the lithium ion batteries when he heard a “pop” and then saw flames.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which caused a smoke condition in the apartment. No one was injured and the fire did not extend to other apartments in the building. Firefighters vented the smoke.

The landlord was able to locate temporary housing for the family. The Red Cross is also assisting the family.

A four-car crash drew Action Ambulance and State Police to the northbound side of Route 128 between exits 39 and 40 on Saturday at about 9:45 a.m. State Police are handling the investigation.

Just before 1 p.m. on Saturday, a caller reported that a truck had taken down the street sign at the corner of Albion and Main streets. Police located the truck in the area of 75 Albion St. The driver, a South Boston man, told police that he was pulling out of a parking space on Albion Street when the truck hit the street sign. He said that he was looking for a place to pull over on Albion Street and was going to go back and check the damage to the sign. There were no injuries and the truck was not damaged.

A Wakefield woman was taken to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital after her foot was run over by a car leaving Wakefield Plaza on Broadway at about 4:15 p.m. on Saturday. The driver of the 2008 Nissan Frontier, a Naples, Florida man, told police that he did not see the pedestrian. Police will review any available security video as part of their investigation.

At about  11 a.m. on Sunday, police helped with the exchange of papers after a minor car crash in the area of 652 Main Street between a 2007 Toyota Sequoia and a 2013 Toyota RAV4.

A Summer Street homeowner called police at about 12:45 p.m. on Sunday to report vandalism after an outside storm window of the home was broken sometime overnight. The resident had surveillance camera footage that showed three youths running from the front of the house. Police are checking the video to see if any suspects can be identified.

The Fire Department responded to 43 calls over the weekend, of which 28 were for medical aid.
