WAKEFIELD — A local 11-year-old boy was taken by ambulance to Mass. General Hospital with significant leg injuries after he was struck by a motor vehicle while riding a dirt bike on Line Road early Saturday afternoon. Police, Fire and Action Ambulance responded to Line Road at about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The initial call reported that a child had been struck by a car, which then “sped off.” Police reported that the vehicle subsequently returned to the scene. The driver of the 2013 GMC, a Reading woman, told police that she had heard a bang and wasn’t sure what it was. She said that after she pulled over she realized there was a bike under her car.

The police report was not completed at press time. Police are waiting to speak to the young victim as part of their investigation.

Just before 9 p.m. on Saturday, an anonymous caller told police that a youth threw a soda at a car on Main Street and then took out a knife and was talking to some girls. Police located a 14-year-boy fitting the description but were not able to locate a victim or any witnesses to the alleged event. The youth, who did have a pocket knife in his possession, told police that he was on his bike and became concerned that a car was following him.

At about 10:30 p.m. on Friday, police headed off a group of youths apparently intent on entering the vacant Winship property on Mansion Road. The youths were sent on their way.

Police, Fire and Action Ambulance responded to a two-car crash on Farm Street at about 4:15 p.m. on Saturday. Police said that a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by a Melrose woman rear-ended a 2001 Toyota Corolla driven by a Stoneham man in the area of Nahant Street. One driver complained of an arm injury due to airbag deployment, but it was unclear from the report if she was taken to the hospital.

Just after 11 a.m. on Sunday, police responded to a minor two-car crash on Main Street near Yale Avenue. The driver of a 2012 Chevy Volt, a Saugus man, told police that he stopped in traffic after he realized that he had missed his turn. He started backing up and did not see the 2018 Subaru behind him and backed into it.

Police arrested a 53-year-old Providence, Rhode Island man for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute after an officer witnessed an apparent drug transaction in parking lot of the Irving Gas station on Salem Street yesterday afternoon.

Police said that Officer John Whaley was on Salem Street, near Montrose Avenue, when he observed a Ford F150 in the parking lot with the male occupant looking around nervously.

A short time later, according to police, a Toyota 4Runner pulled into the space next to the Ford. Whaley watched as the man got out of the pickup truck and entered the Toyota. After about two minutes he got out of the Toyota and back into the Ford. Both vehicles then drove out of the parking lot.

Based on his training,Whaley suspected that a drug transaction had taken place. He pulled the Toyota over on Salem Street near the Lynnfield line. In the course of investigating, police found two plastic twists containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine.

Luis B. Santiago of 100 Broad St. in Providence, RI was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute a Class B drug (cocaine).

The Fire Department responded to 29 calls over the weekend, including 16 for medical aid.

Firefighters responded to two cases of illegal outside burning on Friday night, one on Albion Street at about 8:30 p.m. and another on Elm Street at about 10:45 p.m.

At about 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, firefighters responded to a spill of hydraulic fluid from a ruptured line on a backhoe on Vernon Street that extended into Lynnfield. Firefighters applied an absorbent to soak up the fluid. The DEP was also notified.

At about 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, firefighters went to a Green Street address for a leaf fire that was reportedly caused by the careless disposal of a cigarette. The homeowner was able to extinguish the fire with a garden hose.
